The Taraba State Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce has arrested two suspected illegal miners during a raid on an illegal gold mining site in Mayo Kam, Gantu village, located in Bali Local Government Area.
Speaking in Jalingo on Monday, the chairman of the taskforce, Emmanuel Jamu, said the operation followed weeks of intelligence gathering. He explained that security personnel crossed difficult terrain to reach the remote mining location.
According to Jamu, many of the suspected miners escaped into nearby forests before security operatives arrived, but two suspects were captured while attempting to flee.
The taskforce also recovered several items allegedly used for illegal mining, including water pumping machines, generators, digging tools, and mineral-processing equipment.
Jamu warned that the crackdown on illegal mining would continue across the state, stressing that those involved would eventually be brought to justice.
He appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to provide credible information that would help security agencies track down other suspects still on the run.
The two arrested suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, while the taskforce plans further operations in other identified illegal mining hotspots.
The Taraba State Government had suspended all mining activities on June 19 over security concerns and subsequently established the Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce to enforce the directive.
