A United States immigration officer fatally shot a 26-year-old Colombian man during an enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday, marking the second fatal shooting involving federal immigration agents in less than a week.
According to officials, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were attempting to stop a vehicle linked to a person with an active deportation order when the incident occurred. Authorities later clarified that the man who was killed was not the individual named in the arrest warrant.
Maine Senator Angus King called for a full, transparent investigation after learning the victim was not the intended target. He also expressed concern that the officers involved were reportedly not wearing body cameras.
ICE said the officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative leave, while the FBI has launched an independent investigation into the incident.
A local witness said he heard several gunshots before seeing officers remove the injured driver from the vehicle. The witness claimed the victim said, "I tried to stop," before losing consciousness.
Immigrant rights organisations described the victim as a Colombian national who was legally authorised to work in the United States. They condemned the killing and demanded accountability.
Maine Governor Janet Mills described the shooting as a tragedy, saying reports that the victim was not the intended target raised serious concerns about how immigration enforcement operations are being conducted.
The incident sparked protests in Biddeford, where demonstrators gathered to demand justice and greater oversight of ICE operations. The shooting follows another fatal encounter involving an ICE agent and a Mexican national in Texas last week, intensifying scrutiny of the agency's enforcement tactics under President Donald Trump's immigration policies.
