Spain has deployed military personnel to the North African border city of Ceuta after thousands of migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave from Morocco overnight.
Videos shared on social media showed large groups of migrants swimming into Ceuta using inflatable tubes and other flotation devices, while others forced their way through a gate in the border fence before entering the city.
In response to the mass crossing, the Spanish government announced the deployment of military units to reinforce border security after local police were overwhelmed by the influx.
According to Spain's Interior Ministry, three platoons of 20 soldiers each, supported by a diving unit and a military vessel, will be stationed in the area. Additional police intervention units are also being deployed, increasing the total number of security personnel to about 200.
Earlier, Ceuta's regional government appealed to authorities in Madrid to send the army to restore order and secure the border with Morocco.
Ceuta, along with Melilla, is one of Spain's two autonomous cities located in North Africa. The enclaves represent the European Union's only land border with Africa and have frequently experienced attempts by migrants seeking entry into Europe.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as security operations remain underway.
