Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has announced plans to create thousands of jobs by reviving the state's textile industry, cotton ginneries, and oil mills.
The governor made the announcement after joining Vice President Kashim Shettima on a tour of the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ) in Benin Republic, an agro-industrial hub that processes cotton, cashew nuts, soybeans, and other agricultural products into finished and semi-finished goods.
Lawal said the visit provided valuable lessons on how strong government policies, quality infrastructure, and private sector investment can boost local industries, support farmers, and generate employment.
Reflecting on Zamfara's past, the governor recalled that the state's textile industry once employed thousands of workers. He noted that the former Zamfara Textile Industry operated three daily shifts with about 2,000 workers on each shift, while the state also had 23 cotton ginneries and an oil mill that processed cotton seeds into edible oil.
He expressed determination to restore cotton production and textile manufacturing, describing the initiative as one of the key legacies he hopes to leave behind.
According to Lawal, reviving the sector will strengthen the agricultural value chain, create employment opportunities, increase local production, and improve the economic well-being of Zamfara residents.
The inspection tour also included Governors Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Dikko Umar Radda (Katsina), and Umar Namadi (Jigawa), who joined the Vice President to study the industrial model.
