The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral body of failing to investigate allegations that governors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) diverted about ₦800 billion from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds for political and campaign activities.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by SERAP's Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the suit was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja and is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1426/2026.
SERAP said the action followed reports alleging that APC governors had been making monthly contributions from their FAAC allocations into a special campaign fund to support President Bola Tinubu's 2027 re-election bid.
The organisation cited media reports and an opinion article by columnist Festus Adedayo, which alleged that around ₦800 billion intended for President Tinubu's re-election campaign had been sourced through questionable deductions from public funds.
In the suit, SERAP is asking the court to compel INEC to investigate the allegations and require the APC and the affected governors to disclose details of any campaign fund, including the identities of donors and the lawful sources of the money.
The group is also seeking an order directing INEC to review compliance with Section 91 of the Electoral Act, which regulates political donations, campaign financing, and disclosure requirements for political parties and candidates.
SERAP argued that the allegations raise serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The organisation maintained that the Electoral Act empowers INEC to investigate campaign financing, enforce donation limits, and impose sanctions where violations are established.
It further stated that failure to enforce campaign finance regulations could undermine public confidence in the electoral system and Nigerians' constitutional right to participate in free and fair elections.
No hearing date has yet been fixed for the case.
