Qatar has declared a four-day national mourning period following the death of the country's Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 74.
In an official statement issued on 12 July 2026, the Amiri Diwan announced that the mourning period takes immediate effect from Sunday, with flags to be flown at half-mast across the country throughout the four days.
The government also confirmed that ministries, government agencies, public institutions, and other state bodies will suspend work beginning Monday, 13 July. Normal official activities are scheduled to resume on Sunday, 19 July.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, served as the country's Emir from 1995 until 2013, when he peacefully transferred power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from leaders and citizens in Qatar and around the world, who have praised his role in transforming the nation into a major regional and global player.
Authorities have also announced that funeral prayers for the late Father Amir will be held on Sunday.
