Rising School Graduation Costs Increase Financial Pressure on Lagos Parents

The growing cost of school graduation ceremonies is placing increasing financial strain on many families in Lagos, with parents saying celebrations have shifted from recognising academic achievement to showcasing wealth.

As schools across the state prepare to mark the end of the academic session, many parents are struggling to meet graduation fees, purchase customised outfits, and cover the cost of parties despite the country's economic challenges.

A survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) found that graduation ceremonies are now common at nearly every stage of education, from nursery and kindergarten to primary and secondary school. Many parents, however, questioned the need for expensive ceremonies, especially for students who are simply progressing to the next class.

Several parents said the biggest expense often comes from purchasing school-approved fabrics and paying high tailoring fees, particularly for female students whose outfits are expected to follow fashionable trends.

Some parents described the celebrations as unnecessary and urged schools to adopt simpler graduation programmes that focus on academic success rather than elaborate fashion displays.

Others argued that graduation remains an important milestone worth celebrating, saying the occasion recognises both the students' achievements and the sacrifices made by their families.

Tailors in Lagos also reported increased demand for graduation outfits, although many said customers often complain about the cost of producing the complex designs they request. Some revealed they had turned down orders because clients expected high-quality work at very low prices.

Education stakeholders called on schools to introduce standard graduation gowns instead of requiring customised clothing. They said the move would reduce financial pressure on parents, discourage unhealthy competition among students, and restore graduation ceremonies to their original purpose of celebrating learning and academic achievement.
