Saudi Arabia is taking new steps to reassure LGBTQ visitors ahead of hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup, as part of broader efforts to strengthen its appeal as a global tourism destination.
A notable development is the announcement by LGBTQ-focused travel company VACAYA of an "Arabian Nights" luxury cruise scheduled for spring 2027. The voyage will depart from the Red Sea city of Jeddah and sail to Ain Sokhna in Egypt. The company says the trip reflects Saudi Arabia's evolving approach to welcoming international visitors while encouraging guests to respect local customs and traditions.
Saudi officials have consistently stated that all visitors are welcome in the kingdom regardless of their background. The country's official tourism website, Visit Saudi, also says LGBTQ travelers are welcome, provided they comply with local laws and cultural expectations.
The initiative comes as Saudi Arabia continues a series of social and economic reforms under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In recent years, the kingdom has introduced measures such as allowing women to drive, reopening cinemas, hosting international entertainment events, and expanding its tourism sector.
Despite these changes, homosexuality remains illegal under Saudi law, and human rights organizations continue to express concern over restrictions on LGBTQ rights and freedom of expression. Activists argue that while foreign visitors may experience greater tolerance, Saudi citizens still face legal and social challenges.
Saudi Arabia has maintained that it is committed to welcoming millions of football fans from around the world during the 2034 FIFA World Cup while expecting all visitors to respect the country's laws, customs, and traditions.
