Brazil's Supreme Court has barred Senator Flavio Bolsonaro from visiting his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, for 90 days after ruling that they violated the conditions of the former leader's house arrest.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the order after Flavio read a handwritten letter from his father during a social media livestream, which the court said breached the restrictions placed on the former president.
Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted over a plot to overturn the results of Brazil's 2022 presidential election, is prohibited from using social media or communicating with the public through third parties while serving his sentence under house arrest.
The 90-day ban will remain in effect until after the first round of Brazil's presidential election on October 4, 2026, preventing Flavio from meeting his father during most of the election campaign.
The Supreme Court also gave Bolsonaro's legal team 48 hours to explain whether the former president knew that the handwritten letter would be made public online.
In the letter, Jair Bolsonaro urged his political allies to unite behind his son's presidential campaign.
Flavio Bolsonaro condemned the ruling, describing it as excessive and accusing Justice Alexandre de Moraes of attempting to influence the country's election.
His campaign lawyer also criticized the decision, calling it illegal and unconstitutional, arguing that it violated Flavio's rights both as a son and as one of his father's lawyers.
Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for his role in the alleged election plot but was later allowed to serve his sentence under house arrest because of health concerns.
Despite his conviction, the former president remains a prominent figure among Brazil's conservative movement and has endorsed Flavio Bolsonaro as his preferred political successor.
