Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has renewed her appeal for Nigerians to embrace home gardening as a way to improve food security and reduce the impact of rising food prices.
On Monday, she harvested fresh vegetables—including waterleaf, spinach, and fluted pumpkin (ugu)—from the Presidential Villa garden in Abuja. The harvest is part of her Every Home A Garden initiative, which encourages families to grow vegetables in available spaces around their homes.
According to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), the Villa garden, established in July 2024 under the Renewed Hope Initiative, continues to produce a variety of nutritious vegetables nearly two years after it was launched.
After the harvest, the First Lady shared some of the fresh produce with members of her staff, saying the initiative promotes healthy eating, self-reliance, and the culture of sharing. She emphasized that home gardening can help households improve nutrition, cut food costs, and strengthen resilience during periods of high food inflation.
The Every Home A Garden campaign primarily targets women and families, encouraging them to make productive use of available land to supplement household food supplies.
The renewed campaign comes weeks after Oluremi Tinubu sparked public debate over comments encouraging vulnerable Nigerians to engage in small-scale businesses such as frying akara, roasting corn, and producing kuli-kuli. While some critics argued the remarks were out of touch with the country's economic realities, supporters said they were intended to promote empowerment through government-backed grant programmes for low-income families.
The discussion later gained further attention online after an AI-generated image showing the First Lady selling akara circulated on social media, reigniting debate over her earlier remarks.
