House of Representatives Adjourns Plenary to Honour Late Gombe Lawmaker

The House of Representatives on Tuesday adjourned its plenary session until Wednesday, July 8, to honour the late lawmaker representing Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, Bauchi Tongo, who died after a brief illness.

The House, which had just resumed from its end-of-legislative-year recess, held only a short sitting before suspending proceedings in line with the National Assembly's tradition of paying tribute to serving members who pass away.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, led lawmakers in observing a minute of silence before announcing the adjournment. Members also offered Christian and Muslim prayers for the repose of the late legislator's soul.

Tongo, a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), died on June 12, 2026, at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja following a brief illness.

While announcing the adjournment, Kalu urged lawmakers to attend the tribute session in honour of their late colleague, describing it as a solemn duty to pay respect to one of their own.

Legislative activities are expected to resume on Wednesday, July 8, after the House concludes the memorial proceedings. The National Assembly traditionally suspends plenary whenever a serving lawmaker dies as a mark of respect before normal business resumes.
