A Chinese court has sentenced former Nanjing city official Yang Youlin to death after finding him guilty of accepting more than 2.2 billion yuan ($325 million) in bribes over a 30-year period.
The 69-year-old was also convicted of embezzlement, abuse of power, and money laundering. According to Chinese authorities, Yang used his government positions between 1993 and 2023 to help individuals obtain engineering contracts, land deals, and financing in exchange for cash and valuable gifts.
The court in Changzhou, eastern China, described his crimes as "extremely serious," saying they caused significant losses to the interests of the state and the public.
Yang's case is part of President Xi Jinping's long-running anti-corruption campaign, which has targeted senior government officials, military officers, and banking executives.
Although Yang pleaded guilty, expressed remorse, and cooperated with investigators, the court ruled that the seriousness of his offences outweighed any mitigating factors and upheld the death sentence.
China rarely hands down death sentences for corruption cases, but the punishment has been imposed in several high-profile cases involving exceptionally large sums of money.
