The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to urgently secure access to two detained Palestinian doctors, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and Dr. Marwan Al-Hams, amid reports of torture and deteriorating health in Israeli custody.
The rights group said Dr. Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, is in critical condition after allegedly enduring repeated beatings, solitary confinement and denial of medical care. According to his lawyer, who visited him on July 2, Abu Safiya showed visible injuries, severe weakness and difficulty speaking and breathing, raising fears for his life.
Euro-Med also expressed concern over the condition of Dr. Marwan Al-Hams, director of field hospitals in Gaza, citing reports that he has suffered repeated abuse in detention and experienced a serious heart attack.
The organization urged the immediate release of both doctors, arguing that, as civilian medical personnel, they are protected under international humanitarian law. It also called on the Red Cross to conduct immediate visits, monitor their health and ensure they receive urgent medical treatment.
The rights group further appealed to the international community, the International Criminal Court and United Nations human rights bodies to investigate the reported abuses and press for the protection and release of the detained doctors.
Israeli authorities have not publicly responded to the latest allegations. Previously, Israel has denied systematically mistreating detainees and says prisoners are held in accordance with Israeli law.
