The Sokoto State Police Command says it has foiled a bandit attack on Daraye Village in Wamako Local Government Area, killing one suspected bandit and recovering an AK-47 rifle with live ammunition.
According to the command, the operation took place in the early hours of Saturday, July 4, after security operatives received a distress call at about 1:35 a.m. reporting that a large group of heavily armed bandits had invaded the community.
Police spokesperson DSP Ahmad Rufa’i said operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU), and other tactical teams were immediately deployed to reinforce officers at the Wamakko Divisional Headquarters.
The security team engaged the attackers in a prolonged gun battle, forcing the bandits to flee into nearby forests with gunshot wounds.
A subsequent search operation led to the killing of one suspected bandit. Officers also recovered an AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and 28 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
The police said confidence-building patrols have been intensified in the area to reassure residents and prevent further attacks, while neighbouring divisional headquarters have been placed on high alert to intercept fleeing suspects seeking medical treatment.
The Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, commended the officers for their bravery and professionalism. He reaffirmed the command's commitment, in collaboration with other security agencies, to sustaining operations against banditry and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
