At least six people have been killed and more than 30 villages abandoned following a series of bandit attacks in Danchadi District of Bodinga Local Government Area, Sokoto State.
According to an official report submitted by the district authorities, the attacks occurred between Wednesday and Thursday, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes. The assailants also rustled more than 1,000 livestock, including cattle and camels.
The report, dated July 3, 2026, was signed by the District Head of Danchadi, Alhaji Lirwanu Mafaran Kuwarun Sarkin Musulmi, and sent to the Chairman of Bodinga Local Government Council, with copies forwarded to the Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The affected communities include Kyaluje, Dibarke, Gidan Gadanga, Gidan Dan Bube, Dutsin Mai Gunya, Batsauje, Sire Modi, Gwantsi, Kore Maiganga, Bangi Rafi, Bangi Dutsin, Yabawa, Lageji, Bille, Gonin Gari, Wumumu, Chohi, Saran Malan, Wure Yal'dde, Gidan Hodi, Dabugi, Rukusawa, Tunga, Lakes, Maikataru, Dutsin Toka, Karaje, Kwantsi Buga, Yan Gidaje, Runbuki, Kwantsi Tunga and Lau Gari.
A traditional ruler in the district, who requested anonymity, confirmed the report, saying he personally delivered copies to security agencies operating in the area.
Hundreds of displaced residents have reportedly taken refuge in Danchadi, Bodinga and Sifawa, with many staying in schools and the homes of relatives.
One displaced resident from Kyaluje, Malam Mainasara Danjumma, said armed bandits stormed the village around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday and remained there until midnight, looting homes, stealing valuables and mobile phones, and assaulting several women.
He said the attackers killed the village's Chief Imam, Malam Bashar Kyaluje, along with two other residents.
"We are in a state of confusion and distress. Some of us are still searching for our family members because the village has been completely devastated," Danjumma said.
He appealed to the government to strengthen security, noting that previous warnings about repeated bandit attempts had gone unanswered.
Another resident, Malam Shuaibu, expressed concern that some displaced villagers had begun returning home despite the absence of additional security personnel, warning that they could face renewed attacks.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Chairman of Bodinga Local Government Area, Alhaji Muhammad Shehu, and the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command were unsuccessful as they did not respond to calls before the report was published.
