Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a 42-year-old man accused of attempting to attack a traditional ruler's palace with a locally made pistol in Essien Udim Local Government Area.
The command's spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said the suspect, identified as Bassey Udo Idiong, was arrested on July 1, 2026, after police received a distress call reporting that he had stormed the palace while armed and allegedly threatened to shoot the occupant.
According to the police, officers responded swiftly to the report, disarmed the suspect without incident, and recovered the locally manufactured pistol.
DSP John said the prompt intervention prevented what could have resulted in a tragic loss of life and demonstrated the command's commitment to tackling crime across the state.
She added that the suspect remains in police custody while investigators work to determine the source of the firearm, establish the motive behind the alleged attack, and identify any possible accomplices or criminal networks linked to the case.
The police said the suspect will be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.
Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the officers for their professionalism and quick response, reaffirming the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing and sustained operations against violent crime and illegal firearms.
He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, assuring them that all reports would be treated confidentially. The commissioner warned criminals that the command remains determined to protect lives and property and will not allow anyone to threaten the peace and security of the state.
