Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will remain under house arrest after Brazil's Supreme Court ruled that his medical condition justifies continuing the arrangement.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the humanitarian measure remains "reasonable, appropriate and proportionate," noting that Bolsonaro's health has improved while serving his sentence at home.
The 71-year-old former president has been serving a 27-year prison sentence since November after being convicted of plotting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro's lawyers argued that he requires specialized medical care at home due to ongoing health problems stemming from the 2018 stabbing attack during his presidential campaign. He has undergone several medical procedures in recent years and was hospitalized earlier this year with severe pneumonia.
In March, the court initially granted Bolsonaro 90 days of house arrest on medical grounds. The latest ruling extends that arrangement.
The decision comes despite an incident last month in which a firearm belonging to Bolsonaro was seized from a member of his security team during a police checkpoint. Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet had recommended that Bolsonaro remain under house arrest, saying there was no evidence that the former president had violated the conditions of his confinement.
Justice Moraes agreed, ruling that there was no proof of serious misconduct that would justify sending Bolsonaro back to prison.
