The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has donated ₦25 million to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at Bode Market in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.
Alli announced the donation during a sympathy visit to the market, where he met with affected traders and expressed his condolences over the losses caused by the inferno. He was received by the market leadership, including the Babaloja, Salau Oloya, and the Iyaloja, Sikira Alaja.
Speaking during the visit, the senator said leadership should be reflected through compassion and practical support during difficult times. He noted that the financial assistance was aimed at helping traders rebuild their businesses and recover from the disaster.
He reaffirmed the APC's commitment to supporting residents of Oyo State through responsive leadership and people-focused interventions.
The APC Women Leader in the state, Adekemi Opatunde, also donated ₦5 million and 15,000 nose masks to support the affected traders and improve safety within the market.
The donation comes after the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Bimbo Adekanmbi, earlier contributed ₦2.5 million as relief for victims.
The fire, which broke out earlier this week, destroyed numerous shops and goods worth millions of naira, particularly in the market's herbal products section. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
Bode Market is one of Ibadan's largest commercial centres, serving traders from across the South-West and other parts of Nigeria, especially those dealing in herbs, animal skins, and traditional products.
Several affected traders said the fire started at night after the market had closed, leaving many business owners devastated as they continue to count their losses. Authorities are yet to establish the exact cause of the incident.
