Police Arrest 20-Year-Old Suspected Bandits' Arms Supplier in Benue

The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Joro Jarkata, suspected of supplying ammunition to armed bandits in Guma Local Government Area of the state.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondona, the suspect was arrested during a routine stop-and-search operation carried out by officers from the Guma Division on July 28, 2026.

Police said two men were travelling on a motorcycle when they were stopped. One of the suspects reportedly jumped off the motorcycle and escaped into a nearby bush, while Jarkata, a native of Awe Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, was arrested.

A search of the suspect led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition allegedly hidden in his possession.

The police said the suspect is currently in custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for further investigation.

Authorities added that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice and determine the source and intended destination of the recovered ammunition.

Benue State Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and professionalism. He reaffirmed the command's commitment to tackling the illegal circulation of firearms and ammunition and dismantling criminal networks operating in the state.

The Commissioner also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station to support ongoing security efforts.
