The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated Colombia’s President-elect, Abelardo Espriella, following his victory in the country's presidential runoff election held on 21 June 2026.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government welcomed the outcome of the democratic process and expressed its readiness to work closely with the incoming Colombian administration, which is scheduled to be inaugurated on 7 August 2026.
According to the statement, Nigeria and Colombia share common values of democracy, peace, and sustainable development. The Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in key areas such as trade, investment, security, and South-South cooperation.
The statement also wished President-elect Espriella success as he prepares to lead Colombia and expressed confidence in his efforts to promote the country's progress and prosperity.
Espriella won the runoff election with 49.66 percent of the vote, defeating his main rival, Iván Cepeda, who secured 48.70 percent.
Nigeria said it looks forward to expanding cooperation with Colombia for the mutual benefit of both nations.
