Over 900,000 Evacuated as Typhoon Bavi Nears Eastern China

More than 900,000 people have been evacuated in eastern China as Typhoon Bavi approaches the coastal city of Wenzhou, authorities said on Saturday.

The storm, which earlier brought heavy rain and strong winds to Japan's southern islands and passed close to northern Taiwan, is expected to make landfall near Wenzhou early Sunday. Although the typhoon has weakened slightly over cooler waters, weather officials warned it still carries dangerous amounts of rainfall capable of triggering floods and landslides.

Chinese authorities evacuated over 600,000 residents from Zhejiang Province and more than 300,000 from neighboring Fujian Province as a precaution.

In Taiwan, more than 14,000 people were moved from vulnerable mountain communities, while nearly all cities declared a typhoon holiday. Around 920 international flights and 282 domestic flights were cancelled, and public services were scaled back as the island prepared for the storm.

Taiwan reported 87 injuries, mostly caused by falls and flying debris, but no fatalities. In the Philippines, however, at least 17 people died after heavy rains linked to the enhanced southwest monsoon intensified by Typhoon Bavi.

Officials across the affected regions continue to monitor the storm closely and have urged residents to remain indoors, follow evacuation orders, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
