Nigeria has the largest fleet of private jets in Africa, with about 240 aircraft currently operating across the country, according to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
Keyamo disclosed this during a visit to Bombardier Inc. in Montreal, Canada, where he led a delegation of Nigerian aviation officials and private jet operators to discuss the establishment of a Bombardier aircraft maintenance and service centre in Nigeria.
The minister said such a facility would reduce the country's dependence on overseas maintenance, save foreign exchange, create skilled jobs, and strengthen Nigeria's position as a regional aviation hub.
He noted that Nigeria's private jet fleet has grown significantly in recent years. However, he expressed concern that many of the aircraft are foreign-registered and are allegedly involved in illegal charter operations, prompting the Federal Government to establish a task force to investigate the issue.
According to Keyamo, a local maintenance centre would improve operational efficiency, support fleet modernization, and enhance technical training and aerospace development in Nigeria.
The Federal Government said its ongoing partnerships with leading aircraft manufacturers, including Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, and Bombardier, are part of efforts to modernize the aviation sector and position Nigeria as Africa's preferred aviation hub.
