Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the artificial intelligence company and two former Apple employees of stealing confidential trade secrets to accelerate the development of AI-powered hardware.
The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in California, alleges that former Apple executives Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan unlawfully took sensitive information, including product designs, manufacturing processes, supplier data, and internal business strategies before joining OpenAI.
According to Apple, Liu retained a company-issued laptop and later accessed Apple's internal systems to download confidential hardware-related files. The company also claims Tan emailed himself supplier information and internal reports before leaving Apple and encouraged employees interviewing with OpenAI to bring Apple components for demonstration purposes.
Apple argues that more than 400 former Apple employees now work at OpenAI, but says hiring former staff does not give the company the right to use Apple's proprietary information.
The legal dispute comes as OpenAI expands into AI hardware following its $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products, a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. Apple alleges that OpenAI also sought confidential manufacturing techniques from its suppliers without authorization.
The lawsuit marks a major escalation in tensions between the two companies, despite their existing partnership that integrates ChatGPT into Apple's Siri and Apple Intelligence services.
OpenAI had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting. The company has previously said it is developing new AI devices designed to provide more natural ways for users to interact with artificial intelligence beyond traditional smartphones and computers.
