Meta has discontinued its newly launched AI image-generation feature just days after its debut, following widespread criticism over privacy concerns.
The feature, called Muse Image, allowed users to generate AI images using content from public Instagram accounts. Critics argued that the tool was enabled by default and used people's public photos without clear consent.
In a statement, Meta said the feature was intended to provide users with a creative tool while giving them control over how their public content was used. However, the company admitted it had "missed the mark" after receiving strong public feedback and has now removed the feature.
The backlash was amplified by actress Hannah Einbinder and the actors' union SAG-AFTRA, which urged Instagram users to opt out of the feature. The union criticized the lack of a clear opt-in process, warning that AI-generated digital replicas could be created without users' permission.
Following Meta's decision, SAG-AFTRA welcomed the move, describing it as a responsible step that acknowledges the risks associated with non-consensual AI-generated images.
The incident highlights the growing pressure on technology companies to ensure transparency and give users greater control over how their publicly shared content is used in artificial intelligence systems.
