FG Revives Digital Postcode Project, Begins Integration with NIN

The Federal Government has revived Nigeria's long-delayed digital postcode project and has started integrating it with the National Identification Number (NIN) system to improve digital identity, address verification, and public service delivery across the country.

The initiative was launched following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in Abuja.

Under the agreement, Nigerians will soon be able to retrieve their digital postcode and verify their addresses through the NIN platform. The integration is expected to enhance access to government services, financial institutions, healthcare, education, emergency response, logistics, and e-commerce.

NIMC Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said the partnership combines verified identities with verified addresses, creating a reliable national database that will strengthen identity verification and support Nigeria's digital transformation agenda.

She also announced that NIPOST has been licensed as a front-end enrolment partner, allowing Nigerians to register for their NIN at post offices nationwide.

According to Coker-Odusote, the project will improve transparency, planning, beneficiary targeting, and service delivery while helping financial institutions, government agencies, and businesses verify customer addresses more accurately.

NIPOST Postmaster-General, Tola Odeyemi, described the initiative as a major step toward solving Nigeria's long-standing addressing challenges. She explained that every building in the country will receive a unique GIS-enabled, machine-readable digital address.

Odeyemi revealed that although the digital postcode project was first conceived in 2006, it has now received full Federal Government funding for the first time, paving the way for nationwide implementation.

The partnership is expected to strengthen Nigeria's digital identity infrastructure, promote inclusion, and support the country's growing digital economy.
