Nehemiah Danjuma has achieved a historic milestone after being called to the Nigerian Bar, becoming the first deaf lawyer from Northern Nigeria.
Danjuma, an indigene of Jaba Local Government Area in Kaduna State, earned a Second Class Upper degree in Common Law from the University of Ilorin before completing his Bar Part II programme at the Abuja Campus of the Nigerian Law School.
Announcing the achievement on social media, he wrote: “First Deaf Lawyer from Northern Nigeria. Called to the Bar. History made.”
His success has been widely celebrated by friends, colleagues, and disability rights advocates, who praised his determination and resilience in overcoming barriers throughout his academic and professional journey.
A close friend from the Nigerian Law School, Chukwu Nzubechukwu, revealed that he learned sign language to communicate more effectively with Danjuma, describing him as an inspiration.
Reflecting on his educational journey, Danjuma disclosed that he initially lost the opportunity to study Law after being offered admission to study Primary Education Studies in 2017. He rejected the offer, reapplied the following year, and secured admission to study Law at the University of Ilorin.
Beyond academics, Danjuma has built a strong reputation as a disability rights advocate and youth leader. During his undergraduate years, he represented students with disabilities as a Students' Union Senator and later served two terms as National President of the National Association of Nigerian Deaf Students (NANDS), where he introduced several initiatives, including the association’s first national conference.
His advocacy also gained international recognition through his role as a Youth Adviser on Human Development with the European Union Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria between 2021 and 2024. He was also selected as a Coelho Law Fellow at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he received specialised training in disability rights law and policy.
While at the Nigerian Law School, Danjuma completed externships at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, gaining practical experience in legal research, drafting, and court proceedings.
Following his Call to Bar, Danjuma expressed gratitude to the Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI) for supporting his sign language interpreter and the JASAN Foundation for awarding him a full tuition scholarship throughout law school.
He currently serves as Programmes Lead at the Voice of Disability Initiative, where he coordinates advocacy projects and promotes disability inclusion across Nigeria.
His achievement is being celebrated as a major step forward for disability inclusion in Nigeria's legal profession and is expected to inspire many young persons with disabilities to pursue their ambitions despite challenges.
