Pivotal US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71

Veteran U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has died at the age of 71 following a brief and sudden illness, his office announced on Sunday.

According to a statement released by his communications director, Graham passed away on Saturday evening. His family requested privacy while expressing gratitude for the prayers and support received during this difficult time.

Graham represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate since 2003 after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives beginning in 1995. Over more than two decades in the Senate, he became one of the Republican Party's most influential voices on national security, foreign policy and judicial matters.

Earlier in his political career, Graham was a vocal critic of President Donald Trump but later became one of Trump's closest allies in Congress.

Throughout his Senate career, Graham served on several key committees, including the Appropriations Committee, Judiciary Committee, Environment and Public Works Committee, and most recently chaired the Senate Budget Committee.

Known for his strong support of the U.S. military and national defense, Graham consistently advocated for policies aimed at strengthening America's security interests.

The longtime lawmaker was unmarried and lived in Seneca, South Carolina.

Tributes from colleagues and political leaders are expected as the United States mourns the loss of one of its most prominent Republican senators.
