North Korea Moves to Expand Nuclear Forces, Orders Military Modernisation

North Korea has announced new measures to significantly expand and modernise its nuclear forces, according to state media, as leader Kim Jong Un called for stronger military capabilities to counter what he described as growing security threats.

The decision was reached during an enlarged meeting of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Military Commission on Thursday, where senior military officials approved plans to strengthen the country's nuclear arsenal both in size and technological capability.

Kim said lasting peace and national security could only be achieved through a powerful military capable of deterring and responding to any threat.

The meeting also approved plans to upgrade combat systems, modernise military infrastructure, improve military bases, and enhance the country's intelligence-gathering operations by expanding the role of the Reconnaissance General Bureau.

In addition, North Korea announced plans to develop modern naval bases and expand shipbuilding capacity, describing the move as part of a broader effort to strengthen the navy's strategic role.

The latest announcement comes amid continued tensions on the Korean Peninsula and is expected to draw renewed international concern over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.
