The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a flood alert, warning that 14 states across the country face a medium risk of flooding between July 14 and July 20 due to expected heavy rainfall and rising water levels.
NIHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, said the agency's latest hydrological forecast indicates that localized flooding could occur along major river channels, with 16 monitoring stations identified as high-risk locations.
The states listed in the advisory are Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Lagos, Niger, and Plateau.
According to the agency, flooding could affect several communities, including schools, health centres, markets, and other public infrastructure if preventive measures are not taken.
Mohammed explained that the Annual Flood Outlook serves as a guide for disaster preparedness, emergency response, and flood risk management during the rainy season.
He urged state governments, emergency agencies, and residents to strengthen early warning systems, activate evacuation plans, and intensify public awareness campaigns to reduce the impact of possible flooding.
The NIHSA boss identified Saminaka on the Karam River, the Waya Dam area on the Waya River, and Amber on the Amber River as some of the critical locations expected to be affected.
Residents in flood-prone communities were advised to relocate to safer areas where necessary, clear blocked drainage channels, avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, and regularly monitor official flood updates. Emergency agencies were also encouraged to position relief materials in advance and activate community-based response systems.
