The Federal Government has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerian nationals in South Africa, calling on South African authorities to launch an immediate investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the victims were identified as Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe, popularly known as Big Joe.
According to the ministry, Iroegbu was allegedly killed by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police during an interrogation in Sunnyside, Pretoria, on June 28, 2026. The government also alleged that the same officers were linked to the earlier killing of another Nigerian, Nnaemeka Mathew Andrew Ekpenyong, in April, with no arrests made despite the identities of the suspects reportedly being known.
The second victim, Big Joe, was reportedly shot dead outside his shop in Witbank, Mpumalanga, by unidentified attackers.
Nigeria expressed deep concern over what it described as a growing wave of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa. The government stressed that all suspects, regardless of allegations against them, deserve due process and a fair trial under the law.
The Ministry also criticized inflammatory remarks by a South African government spokesperson, saying such statements could encourage discrimination and violence against Nigerians living in the country.
The Federal Government urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm, obey the law, stay vigilant, and avoid high-risk areas while diplomatic efforts continue. It also appealed to Nigerians at home not to engage in retaliatory actions.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, Nigeria said South Africa has an obligation under international law to safeguard the lives and property of all foreign residents.
The government warned that if the attacks continue, it may consider additional diplomatic measures.
