The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 38-year-old South African woman, Will Ann, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja for allegedly attempting to smuggle 5.75 kilograms of heroin into Nigeria.
According to the agency, the suspect was intercepted on July 6 after arriving from Doha aboard Qatar Airways Flight QR1433 with her three-year-old son. NDLEA operatives discovered 14 blocks of heroin hidden inside two suitcases.
The agency said the woman initially denied checking in any luggage, but later admitted ownership after officers matched the baggage tags with those attached to her passport.
Investigators believe she is linked to an international drug trafficking network operating between Cambodia and South Africa alongside her husband and another associate.
In a separate operation at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, NDLEA arrested a 48-year-old Nigerian man who allegedly attempted to smuggle methamphetamine into the country. Authorities recovered 100 wraps of the drug weighing 1.715 kilograms after the suspect excreted additional pellets while under observation.
The agency also announced the seizure of 4,143.5 kilograms of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as Canadian Loud, worth over ₦10.3 billion at the Apapa Seaport in Lagos. The shipment was intercepted following weeks of intelligence-led surveillance in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies.
Additionally, NDLEA operatives foiled an attempt to export 2.5 kilograms of skunk concealed inside a gas compressor bound for Cyprus through a Lagos courier company.
NDLEA Chairman, retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the operations and urged personnel nationwide to sustain the agency's campaign against drug trafficking while intensifying public awareness efforts on drug abuse.
