Iran has launched missile and drone attacks on military sites in five Gulf countries and announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following a new wave of US airstrikes, marking a major escalation in the ongoing conflict.
According to Iranian authorities, the attacks targeted locations in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Jordan, which Tehran accuses of supporting US military operations by hosting American bases.
The latest escalation came after the United States carried out a third round of airstrikes within a week, targeting Iranian missile, drone and radar facilities. US Central Command said the strikes were aimed at weakening Iran's military capabilities after recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the country was responding to what it described as Washington's violation of a memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides last month.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for attacks on several US military installations across the region, including Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, military facilities in Jordan, and American military sites in Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
Qatar confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted incoming missiles, while officials said three people were injured by falling debris. Kuwait and Bahrain also reported intercepting aerial threats and activated emergency security measures.
Iran has also declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, saying the waterway will remain shut until what it called an end to US interference in the region. The strategic shipping route carries about 20 percent of the world's oil and gas trade, raising concerns over global energy supplies.
Several Gulf countries, including Oman and Qatar, strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as violations of their sovereignty and warning that the escalation could further destabilize the region.
The renewed fighting has increased fears of a wider regional conflict, with diplomatic efforts to restore peace facing growing challenges.
