A man has been arrested after a gunshot was reportedly fired outside the York Mosque and Islamic Centre in Bull Lane, York, United Kingdom, in the early hours of Thursday.
According to North Yorkshire Police, officers responded swiftly to the incident, which occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m., and arrested a suspect who remains in police custody. Authorities said investigations are ongoing, and the motive behind the incident has not yet been established.
Superintendent Ed Haywood-Noble described the incident as "deeply concerning" for the local community, assuring residents that a thorough investigation is underway. He added that any offences identified during the investigation would be presented before the courts.
Following the incident, York Central MP Rachael Maskell called on residents to remain united and support one another, describing the shooting as a shocking event.
Faizal Mohamudbuccus, the police liaison officer and a committee member of the York Mosque and Islamic Centre, said mosque officials cancelled the early morning prayer, scheduled for around 4:00 a.m., after notifying worshippers through the community's WhatsApp group as a precaution.
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
