A devastating landslide struck Pengshui County in China's southwestern municipality of Chongqing on Friday, burying an unknown number of residents and causing several buildings to collapse.
According to Chinese state media, a local community worker noticed falling rocks at about 8:00 a.m. and immediately raised an alarm. Authorities began evacuating more than 60 residents, but the hillside gave way around 9:08 a.m. while the evacuation was still underway, trapping several people beneath the debris.
Emergency responders rescued nine people from the rubble, with officials reporting that none of them sustained life-threatening injuries. The exact number of people still trapped has not yet been confirmed.
Television footage showed massive amounts of rock and earth crashing onto riverside homes as frightened residents fled through thick clouds of dust. Dashcam footage also captured the dramatic moment the hillside collapsed, blocking roads and forcing motorists to stop.
China's Ministry of Emergency Management activated a Level Two emergency response and deployed a 100-member rescue team to the disaster area. In addition, 206 firefighters and rescue personnel, supported by 49 emergency vehicles, were sent to assist with search-and-rescue operations.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the landslide, while rescue efforts continue.
