A Kano State High Court has sentenced a 19-year-old woman, Saudat Jibrin, to death by hanging after finding her guilty of murdering her husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their wedding.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Maryam Sabo ruled that the prosecution had proved the charge of culpable homicide beyond reasonable doubt.
“I hereby sentence Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging for culpable homicide. You have 90 days to appeal,” the judge declared.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on May 5, 2025, at Farawa Quarters in Kano. Prosecuting counsel Lamido Abba-Sorondinki told the court that the convict allegedly poisoned her husband's "Zoho" drink before fatally attacking him with a knife at about 9:00 p.m.
The prosecution called two witnesses during the trial to support its case.
Jibrin, a resident of Kumbotso Local Government Area, denied the allegation throughout the proceedings. She was charged under Section 221(a) of the Penal Code, which deals with culpable homicide.
During the defence, counsel Abdulfatah Muhammad pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy. He told the court that Jibrin had undergone significant personal reform while in custody, including memorising the Holy Qur’an. He also urged the court to consider her family circumstances, noting that she is the eldest child and that her younger siblings depend on her for support.
Despite the plea for leniency, the court found her guilty and imposed the death sentence, while informing her of her right to appeal the judgment within 90 days.
