The Osun State Police Command has released the Secretary to the Osun State Government (SSG), Teslim Igbalaye, following his arrest during a police operation in Osogbo.
His release was confirmed on Thursday by Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, who thanked the Inspector-General of Police and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for what he described as responding to public calls for justice.
The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, also confirmed that Igbalaye had been released.
Igbalaye and five others were arrested on Wednesday after police raided his residence in Osogbo. According to the police, the operation was based on intelligence indicating that a wanted suspect was hiding at the location.
During the raid, officers recovered ₦4.81 million in cash, two Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), a voter register, a Dynabook laptop, a photocopy machine and a printer.
Police said the recovered items are being examined as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged electoral offences, including vote buying, criminal conspiracy and harbouring a wanted suspect.
The command stressed that investigations are still ongoing and that additional charges may arise depending on the outcome of the inquiry.
Before Igbalaye's release, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, alleged that the SSG's arrest was politically motivated following an incident at an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stakeholders' meeting.
However, the police maintained that the operation was intelligence-driven and carried out in accordance with the law.
