The Kaduna State Government says its free school feeding programme has become a major factor in increasing school enrolment, revealing that about 40 percent of pupils in public schools attend classes because of the initiative.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Uba Sani on the School Feeding Programme, Fauziya Buhari-Ado, disclosed this while receiving an Award of Excellence in Education Advancement from the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria.
According to her, the state introduced free school feeding alongside free basic education to tackle the growing number of out-of-school children, particularly Almajiri pupils and children from vulnerable families.
Buhari-Ado said the government recognised early that poverty, insecurity, and the Almajiri system were keeping many children away from school, prompting the administration to introduce reforms aimed at improving access to education.
She noted that regular monitoring visits to schools have shown that many parents send their children to school because they are guaranteed at least one nutritious meal each day.
The governor’s aide added that the programme has helped improve school enrolment, reduce absenteeism, and encourage children to remain in classrooms.
She also praised Governor Uba Sani’s investments in education infrastructure, teacher support, social protection programmes, and other initiatives designed to improve learning outcomes across Kaduna State.
The Kaduna State Government says it will continue strengthening its education policies to reduce the number of out-of-school children and ensure that every child has access to quality education.
