Iran Projects Continuity, Vows Retaliation at Khamenei Memorial Ceremonies

Iran has launched large-scale public memorial events for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran, using the ceremonies to reinforce messages of national unity, continuity of leadership, and retaliation following his assassination earlier this year.

Thousands of mourners gathered at Tehran's Grand Mosalla on Saturday as Khamenei's coffin was displayed under tight security. The late leader, who ruled Iran for nearly 37 years, was killed in an airstrike at the start of the conflict involving the United States and Israel in February.

The commemorations featured red flags symbolizing martyrdom and revenge in Shia Islam, while participants chanted slogans against the United States and Israel. The official theme of the ceremonies, "We Must Rise," emphasized the government's call for resilience and loyalty to the Islamic Republic.

Authorities deployed heavy security around the venue, with armoured vehicles, snipers, and members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps guarding the procession. Security personnel also carried out extensive checks on mourners entering the site.

Many attendees pledged support for Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father after his death. Officials said the memorial events demonstrate continued public backing for the country's leadership.

Iran has declared public holidays through Monday to encourage nationwide participation, with officials expecting millions of people to join funeral activities across the country.

Khamenei's funeral procession is scheduled to move through Tehran on Monday before continuing to major Shia holy cities, including Qom, Najaf, and Karbala, ahead of his burial in Mashhad later this week.

Senior Iranian military commanders warned that Khamenei's death would strengthen the country's resolve, while representatives from several countries, including Pakistan, attended the memorial ceremonies. Delegations from Iran-aligned groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis were also present.

Iranian authorities say the week-long commemorations are intended to honour Khamenei's legacy while demonstrating the country's determination to continue its current political and military course.
