Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, giving eligible citizens more time to register ahead of future elections.
The commission announced on Friday that the registration exercise, previously scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, will now continue until July 24, 2026.
INEC said the decision followed a review of the registration process and consultations with its state offices, political parties, civil society groups, and other stakeholders.
In a major technological upgrade, the electoral body also introduced an online self-service voter registration portal, allowing first-time voters to begin and complete their registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office.
According to INEC, the new platform features advanced identity verification, biometric validation, and integrity checks to ensure the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
The commission encouraged all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to take advantage of both the extended registration period and the newly launched online platform.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to making voter registration more accessible, inclusive, and technology-driven as preparations continue for the 2027 general elections.
