Hundreds of members of Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, citing worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and declining confidence in the ruling party.
The defectors, mostly from Samo Village in the Faga/Alasan Ward, officially joined the ADC during a reception at the party's state secretariat in Sokoto on Wednesday.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the former APC members said rising living costs, increasing poverty, and persistent insecurity had forced them to seek a new political platform. They argued that despite government promises to improve the economy and security, many Nigerians continue to struggle to meet basic needs, while businesses and farming activities have been severely affected.
The group also expressed concern over recurring attacks by armed criminals, saying insecurity has forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands or reduce cultivation due to fear of kidnappings and violence.
They said they believe the ADC offers a credible alternative capable of addressing Nigeria's economic and security challenges through inclusive governance and people-focused policies.
Welcoming the new members, ADC Chairman in Tambuwal Local Government Area, Bello Dan Marafa, described the defections as evidence of growing public dissatisfaction with the APC. He assured the defectors of equal opportunities within the party and reaffirmed the ADC's commitment to justice, accountability, and people-centred leadership.
Sokoto State ADC Chairman, Abdullahi Mai Gwandu, also described the mass defection as a major boost to the party's grassroots expansion. He welcomed the new members and urged them to actively contribute to strengthening the party ahead of future elections, expressing confidence that the development would enhance the ADC's presence across Sokoto State.
