Yemen's Houthi movement has announced an immediate naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, marking a significant escalation in the conflict between the Iran-aligned group and the Saudi-led coalition.
In a statement released on Monday, the Houthis said the move was based on the principle of "an eye for an eye," describing it as retaliation for what they called years of blockade imposed on Yemen and a recent attack on Sanaa International Airport.
The group warned that any further military action by Saudi Arabia would trigger a "comprehensive and decisive" response, adding that it is prepared for all possible scenarios. It also called on its supporters to remain mobilised and ready to defend Yemen.
The announcement follows heightened tensions after the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out an attack on Sanaa airport, although Yemen's internationally recognised government claimed responsibility, saying the strike was intended to stop an Iranian aircraft from landing.
In response, the Houthis launched ballistic missiles toward Saudi Arabia's Abha International Airport. Saudi authorities said the missiles were intercepted.
The development has raised concerns over the security of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The waterway is crucial for global oil shipments, and any disruption could have serious consequences for international energy markets.
Analysts say the blockade could also affect Saudi Arabia's oil exports, particularly as the kingdom increasingly relies on its Red Sea export route following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest move signals growing instability in the region and raises fears of further military escalation that could threaten global shipping and energy supplies.
