A severe heatwave sweeping across the eastern United States is expected to disrupt celebrations marking the country's 250th Independence anniversary on July 4, with officials warning of dangerous temperatures and health risks for millions of people.
The anniversary, known as America250, commemorates 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This year's celebrations include major events in Washington, DC, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Boston, featuring parades, concerts, fireworks and historical displays.
In Washington, DC, the Great American State Fair briefly closed after temperatures climbed above 39°C (102°F). Philadelphia cancelled its Salute to Independence parade due to extreme heat, while several other communities postponed or cancelled outdoor events.
Transportation has also been affected, with Amtrak cancelling some train services and warning passengers of delays as high temperatures impact railway infrastructure.
Weather experts say high humidity will make conditions feel even hotter, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Authorities across several cities have opened cooling centres, extended public pool hours and urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and check on elderly and vulnerable people.
Despite the challenging weather, millions of Americans are still expected to participate in nationwide celebrations marking the historic milestone.
