Hamas has officially appointed Khalil Al-Hayya as its new overall leader, replacing Yahya Sinwar, who was killed during fighting with Israeli forces in October 2024.
Al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official and the group's chief negotiator, has become one of the movement's most influential figures following the deaths of Sinwar and former political leader Ismail Haniyeh. He was chosen by Hamas' leadership council after a months-long internal selection process.
Political analysts say Al-Hayya is regarded as more hardline than some other senior Hamas leaders. His appointment is widely seen as a signal that the group intends to maintain its armed resistance and is unlikely to accept international calls to disarm.
The leadership change comes as Hamas faces major challenges after nearly two years of conflict with Israel. Although a ceasefire has reduced large-scale fighting, much of Gaza remains devastated, and humanitarian conditions continue to be severe.
Meanwhile, Israeli military operations continue in parts of Gaza. On Monday, Palestinian medics reported that an Israeli strike in Khan Younis killed at least three people. Israel said it had targeted a militant in the area.
Efforts by international mediators, including Egypt and Qatar, to secure a permanent ceasefire and a broader political agreement have so far failed to produce a breakthrough.
Al-Hayya's appointment is expected to shape Hamas' future strategy and could influence ongoing negotiations over Gaza's future and regional security.
