Hamas has agreed to completely disarm in the Gaza Strip under a new US-backed peace initiative, according to an announcement by US President Donald Trump and confirmation from a senior Hamas official.
Trump said the agreement was reached through the newly established Board of Peace after months of negotiations involving Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States. He described the deal as a major step toward ending the conflict and allowing Gaza to be governed by a new Palestinian administration.
A senior Hamas official told the BBC that the group had accepted the disarmament plan and that an official statement would be released shortly.

The complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups.
The gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.
The reconstruction of the territory.
The deployment of an international stabilization force alongside a new Palestinian police service.
According to US officials, smaller armed factions will be disarmed first, followed by Hamas dismantling its military infrastructure, including tunnels, weapons depots, and production facilities. The process is expected to take considerable time and will be closely monitored.
Trump said Israel would begin withdrawing from Gaza as disarmament progresses, calling the agreement a "critical step" toward lasting peace. He also praised Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey for their mediation efforts.
However, Israel has not officially endorsed the agreement. Reports from Israeli media indicate that some Israeli officials believe the current terms do not fully meet Israel's security demands.
The development comes after months of indirect negotiations in Cairo and marks one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023. Implementation of the agreement will depend on both sides fulfilling their commitments under a strict verification mechanism.
