Nepal's Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, has urged citizens to remain calm after deadly clashes between Hindu and Muslim communities in the country's southern region left three people dead.
The violence began in Sunsari District near the Indian border following a dispute over loud music and religious flags during a Hindu procession. According to police, officers opened fire while attempting to disperse the crowd, resulting in the deaths of two people. A third person later died during a protest in neighboring Siraha District despite a curfew being in effect.
Authorities have imposed curfews in Sunsari and nearby districts to prevent further unrest and restore public order.
In a national address, Prime Minister Shah appealed to citizens, religious leaders, political parties, civil society groups, and the media to promote peace, harmony, and national unity. He also pledged a fair and transparent investigation into the violence, promising that those responsible would be held accountable.
Police said security personnel remain on high alert to protect lives and property while working to restore normalcy with minimal use of force.
Hindus account for about 80 percent of Nepal's population, while the country's southern regions are home to significant Muslim communities. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts to ease tensions continue.
