The United States has apologised after an inaccurate map of Africa was displayed during a presentation at the 26th International AIDS Conference held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In a statement released on Thursday, the US State Department described the incident as "an unfortunate error" and accepted full responsibility for the mistake.
"We take full responsibility for the confusion and misrepresentation it caused for attendees, including our African partners," a State Department spokesperson said.
The presentation, delivered by the US delegation during a session on global health assistance, contained several geographical errors involving African countries. Nigeria was incorrectly shown as a landlocked nation in central Africa, while Mozambique was placed in the Horn of Africa. Côte d'Ivoire was also mistakenly positioned in southern Africa.
Conference participants quickly noticed the mistakes and shared images of the incorrect map on social media, drawing widespread attention.
According to the State Department, the errors occurred after a team member made last-minute changes to the presentation shortly before it was delivered.
Despite the incident, US officials said the conference featured productive discussions on the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
The International AIDS Conference opened on Monday amid concerns over reduced US international aid following President Donald Trump's return to office last year.
However, the United States remains the world's largest public contributor to HIV programmes, accounting for about 74 percent of global public funding for HIV response, according to a UNAIDS report released during the conference.
