Gunmen Kill Farmer, Injure Several in Fresh Cross River Land Dispute

A farmer has been killed and several others injured following a renewed land dispute in the Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident occurred on Friday, July 4, 2026, in Urugbam community. According to the Special Adviser to Governor Bassey Otu on Digital Economy, Philip Obin, the victim, Nkeruwem Ikoh, also known as Obong Ikor Obong, was shot dead while working on his farmland by armed men suspected to have come from the neighbouring Egbor community in Erei South.

Obin described the attack as unprovoked and accused the authorities of failing to protect the affected community. He said several other people also sustained gunshot wounds during the assault.

Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Command said two farmers—Nkeruwem Ikoh and Ukam Ajah Okpan—were attacked by unidentified gunmen at about 3:00 p.m. while working on farmland near Egbor community.

Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah said the victims were rushed for medical assistance, but Ikoh later died from his injuries. The second victim is receiving treatment, while the deceased's body has been deposited at Uwana Mortuary in Afikpo, Ebonyi State.

The police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. Authorities also appealed to residents of Orugbam, Egbor, and neighbouring communities to remain calm, avoid reprisals, and provide useful information to support the ongoing investigation.
