The Federal Government has announced plans to evacuate 270 Nigerian citizens from South Africa as part of its ongoing voluntary repatriation programme for nationals affected by the country's renewed wave of xenophobic tensions.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an Air Peace aircraft will depart Lagos for Johannesburg at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, to airlift the returnees back to Nigeria. The flight is expected to leave Johannesburg at midnight and arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos by 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8.
The evacuation is being coordinated by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria in collaboration with relevant government agencies. Officials say the exercise is aimed at assisting Nigerians who have chosen to return home due to security concerns and other challenges in South Africa.
Government spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said the operation is part of Nigeria's continued commitment to protecting its citizens abroad.
The latest repatriation follows previous evacuation missions carried out by the Federal Government, with Air Peace playing a key role in transporting stranded Nigerians from countries affected by conflict, humanitarian crises and other emergencies.
Authorities have also assured Nigerians who remain in South Africa that efforts are ongoing to ensure their safety despite recent anti-immigrant protests and growing concerns over xenophobic attacks. The planned evacuation comes shortly after another batch of 269 Nigerians was successfully returned to Lagos in a similar government-assisted operation.
