Funeral Procession for Iran's Late Supreme Leader Khamenei Begins in Iraq

Thousands of mourners gathered in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf on Wednesday as funeral ceremonies for Iran's slain Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, commenced.

Iraqi authorities declared a public holiday to allow residents to participate in the procession, which began early in the morning. Khamenei's coffin was taken through the streets of Najaf to the revered Shrine of Imam Ali, drawing large crowds of mourners from Iraq and Iran.

The funeral events are part of Iran's six-day national mourning programme following Khamenei's death during the recent US-Israel military strikes. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, senior Iraqi officials, and members of Khamenei's family attended the ceremonies.

After the Najaf procession, the coffin is scheduled to be moved to Karbala for another religious ceremony before being flown to Mashhad, Iran, where Khamenei will be buried on Thursday.

Iranian officials described the funeral events as a symbol of solidarity between Iran and Iraq, while thousands of mourners paid tribute to the late leader during the procession.
