The Federal Government has evacuated an additional 39 Nigerians from Johannesburg, South Africa, aboard an emergency Air Peace flight as part of its ongoing efforts to bring citizens home following renewed xenophobic attacks.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, announced on Friday that the special flight was arranged to transport Nigerians who were unable to board Thursday's evacuation flight.
She explained that the emergency operation was organised to ensure that the regular evacuation schedule was not disrupted and that all documented returnees could be accommodated.
The aircraft is expected to land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Friday evening. The minister commended Air Peace for providing the additional flight and supporting the government's evacuation efforts.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu also disclosed that another flight carrying about 300 more Nigerians is expected to arrive next week, marking the final phase of the current evacuation exercise.
She reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu's commitment to protecting Nigerians affected by the ongoing xenophobic violence in South Africa.
The evacuation exercise began on June 11, 2026, following renewed anti-foreigner attacks across South Africa that reportedly claimed the lives of several Nigerians. The Federal Government later extended the exercise beyond its original June 30 deadline to enable more citizens to return safely.
